Kempston 48 - 7 Claverdon
Claverdon travelled down from Warwick way and were full of confidence from
their 54-7 win in the previous round. We had read from their web site that their
strenght was in their big forwards and
that was not an understatment. Straight
from the off it was physical up front but
Clavendon forwards failed to press home there slight advantage and
Kempston soon realised that if the ball was moved wide, centres Wayne and tim, were able break several
tackles and make ground every time they got the ball. So it was not long before
Wayne Botha opened the scoring with a try from
midfield beating 3 defenders and running in to score under the post. Straight from the kick off Kempston attaked
the Claverdon defence and were rewarded a penalty in front of the post,
converted by super sub
Claverdon seemed to wake up for a spell and pressured K’s 22 for 10 minutes but only got 3 points reward for all
their effort. This seemed to be the end
of any Claverdon attack for the rest of the half but K’s weren’t finished for the half and good line out ball along with good rucking secured quick clean ball for the
backs to run in two further tries (Tim
Agrgent & Stu Cameron) and at least two easy missed
oppurtunities leaving the score 24- 3 at half time.
The second half saw K's get dragged into the level of rugby Claverdon are used
to and broken play and handling errors coupled with some animated opposition
frustrated K's with the quality of finishing. A try scored by our Number eight
in similar style to last seasons No8 Jamie Goss opened the scoring up, with the
flying salmon like second row, Andrew "glue hands" Stock weaving some
second row magic with his contribution try. After several aerial takes from
kick offs and right at the death Stu Cameron took an opportunist kick from
James Bayliss and galloped under the posts for the final say.
