WELLINGBOROUGH OG 3 KEMPSTON 27
A nervous/apprehensive opening game for Kempston. OG’s had come down with K’s last season from the league above and must
have been equally keen to prove a point that they deserve to go back up. This was going to be a hard game and one that
could determine the out come of the league before the season had even got
going.
It was a hot September day more suited to BBQ’s and beer than playing rugby
and the condition made it a case of the
fittest team would win.
OG’s scrum was strong and K’s struggled at times to hold on to their own
ball but K’s forwards made up the difference in there support of the loose play and were able to spoil and turn over OG’s ball in
the middle of the park. Once K’s backs
got clean ball there were able to open up holes in the OG’s line making ground
everytime but OG’s defence was solid and K’s got held up a couple of times just
short of the line. After about 20
minutes K’s got the first score with a try in the corner by Tim Argent.
The 1st half was end to end stuff with OG’s forwards carrying
the ball well but K’s solid defence was able to prevent them ever crossing the
line and the half time scored finished a close 5 – 3.
The heat and intensity of the 1st have had obviously taken it’s
toll on OG’s as the second half was a totally different game. K’s were able to control the ball better on
their scrums and turn more rucks over giving the backs a lot more ball and
opportunity to run at their weaker
opposition. A good break from fly half Wayne
Botha who then put Tim Argent in for an
easy try under the post was just one of
many 2nd half dominating runs
from K’s backs over OG’s. A well worked
move, from the training ground, saw Stu
Cameron cut in from the wing to score another converted try. K’s were well in control of this game and a
final try from No8 Dan Stones, though assisted by OG’s fly half back kick over
their line, saw the game end 27 – 3.
A good win for K’s aginst a strong pack and hot conditions
